I began shaping at the age of 14, over a decade ago now, learning from master craftsmen Rod Rose and Lance Jagoe, on the mid north coast of NSW. I was taught the whole board building process of hand shaping, laminating and sanding, which I continue this today, hundreds of boards later. Every board with my logo on it has only been crafted by myself.
I enjoy the complexity on handshaping. Having full control of the shaping process from the raw blank to finished board including the laminating and sanding process, is far more rewarding to me than finishing off what gets spat out of a CNC and passing it to a glasser. I love seeing each board come to life through the different stages of production.
Growing up surfing and shaping in Southwest Victoria, where mostly shortboards and step ups are ridden, my main interests in shaping lies in performance designs. Due to the low tolerance of shaping these boards, each millimetre plays a crucial role in its overall performance.
I spent the last 5 years working in Melbourne, as head repairer for Melbourne Surfboard Repairs, and ghost shaper and laminator for Zak Surfboards, before moving to Newcastle to work out of my own factory.
Rather than picking a model, size and litreage, off a board rack, I believe the custom surfboard experience is far superior. I enjoy chatting with the client face to face or over the phone, looking at what boards they are currently riding, and the attributes they like and dislike about them, which helps me better gauge elements and curves of surfboard design that they like.
Riding surfboards is such a personal experience, what works for one person may not work for another, which is why everything from rockers, bottom contours, rails, foam distribution, weight orientation, ability, wave interests and personal goals in surfing are just a small part of what needs to be discussed prior to the board being shaped.
